Understanding Leather Grades
At Ceylon Leather Crafts we would rather you understood leather than simply took our word for it. A hide has layers, and the layer your wallet is cut from decides almost everything about how it will live. Here is what the names actually mean.
Full grain
The outermost layer of the hide — the layer that carried the animal through its life. It holds the tightest, strongest fibres in the whole skin, and nothing is sanded off it. Every scar, wrinkle and insect bite stays exactly where it is. That is why no two pieces are identical, and why full grain leather gets better with use instead of worse. It is the only grade that develops a true patina.
Top grain
The same strong outer layer, lightly corrected to even out the surface. A little more uniform in appearance, still the good part of the hide, still durable. We use it, and we tell you when we have.
“Genuine leather”
This is a label, not a grade — and it is the most misleading phrase in the industry. Genuine leather is what remains after the strong outer layers have been split away: the soft, loose underside of the hide. It is usually sprayed and embossed with an artificial grain pattern so that it resembles the layer it is not. It will crack. It will peel. It will never build a patina, because there is nothing in it to build one with.
Calling it leather is legal. That is the only honest thing about the name.
Bonded leather
Leather scraps ground down and glued onto a backing sheet. It carries the word leather and almost none of the substance. Avoid it.
What we use
Full grain and top grain. Nothing below it, ever. We have never used genuine leather and we never will. If a piece carries our name, it was cut from the part of the hide that was built to last — and it will still be worth carrying in ten years.
That is the whole promise, and it is an easy one to check: look at the edge of any leather good. If the surface layer looks like a coating sitting on top of something spongy, you are holding a split. If the grain runs all the way through, you are holding the real thing.
