The Four Things That Actually Ruin Leather
Most leather that fails early was not worn out. It was damaged, usually by someone trying to look after it. These are the four causes we see, in the order they do the most harm.
1. Heat
This is the one that kills wallets, and it is almost always an accident. A radiator, a car dashboard in the sun, a hairdryer used to speed up drying after rain.
Heat drives the natural oils out of the hide. Once they are gone the fibres become brittle, and brittle leather cracks along exactly the lines where it folds. It cannot be undone — conditioner replaces surface oils, not structure.
If a piece gets soaked, blot it, stuff it loosely with paper to hold its shape, and leave it at room temperature. Slowly. It will be fine.
2. Over-conditioning
The most common mistake among people who care most. Conditioner is not food and leather is not hungry — applied monthly it saturates the fibres, softens the structure and leaves a piece that has gone shapeless and slightly greasy.
Twice a year. A pea-sized amount. That is the whole routine for a wallet.
3. Water, but only the wrong way
Rain is survivable. What damages leather is water combined with heat, or water left to dry unevenly so one area stiffens while another does not.
Never soak leather to clean it — water carries the tanning oils out with it as it evaporates. A barely damp cloth, then dry.
4. Overstuffing
A wallet is cut to hold a certain amount. Carry twice that and the stitching takes a load it was never sized for, the card slots stretch, and stretched leather does not come back. This is the single most common reason a wallet is brought to us for repair.
Take the receipts out.
What we do not worry about
Scratches. On oil pull-up and wax-oiled leathers most rub out under a warm thumb. On veg-tanned they settle in and become the patina. A scratch is not damage; it is use.
The step-by-step routine is in leather care. And if something on a piece we made does fail, bring it back — we repair it for as long as you own it and do not charge for the labour.
