What Is Actually in a Leather Conditioner
Conditioner is the one product most leather owners buy and the one they understand least. Here is what is in the tin, what each ingredient does, and what to keep away from a good hide.
What conditioning actually is
A hide is held supple by fats and oils bound into the fibre structure during tanning. Handling, heat and time draw those out. Conditioner puts fats back so the fibres stay flexible and do not become brittle and crack.
It is not food and it is not a finish. It is a top-up.
The ingredients worth having
Beeswax — sits near the surface, adds a light water-resistant barrier and a low sheen. Does not penetrate deeply, which is exactly what you want from the outer layer of the recipe.
Olive oil — penetrates well and stays soft at room temperature, so it keeps fibres moving rather than stiffening them.
Castor oil — heavier, slower to absorb, and it darkens leather slightly. That darkening is a feature if you want depth and a problem if you wanted your tan wallet to stay pale.
Cinnamon oil — a small amount goes in as a natural preservative and keeps the tin from turning.
Those four are what is in ours. Nothing else needs to be.
What to avoid
Mink oil in quantity — very heavy, darkens dramatically and can leave a hide limp.
Neatsfoot compound — the pure version is fine, but the cheap “compound” is usually cut with petroleum distillates which rot stitching over time.
Silicone and petroleum jelly — sit on the surface, seal the pores and stop the leather breathing. They also stop it ever building a patina.
Anything on suede or nubuck. It flattens the nap and the nap does not come back.
Less than you think
A pea-sized amount for a wallet, worked in with a fingertip, twice a year. Over-conditioning is far more common than under-conditioning and does more harm — it saturates the fibres, softens the structure and leaves the piece shapeless.
