Looking After Leather in Sri Lankan Humidity

On By Ceylon Leather Crafts / 0 comments

Most leather care advice online is written for dry, temperate countries. Following it here will actively harm your wallet. At 80% humidity the problems are the opposite ones, and so are the fixes.

Your leather is not drying out

The single most common mistake we see. People read a guide written for a European winter, condition monthly, and end up with a soft, greasy, shapeless wallet.

In this climate the air is already holding moisture into the hide. Leather here needs less conditioning than the internet tells you, not more. Twice a year is plenty. Once a year is fine for anything not carried daily.

Mould is the real enemy

Warm plus damp plus still air grows mould on leather within weeks. It almost never happens to something carried every day — it happens to the good bag put away after a wedding.

  • Never store leather in plastic. A sealed bag is a mould incubator here
  • Use a cotton dust bag or a pillowcase — something air moves through
  • Avoid cupboards on outside walls, which sweat
  • Take stored pieces out every few weeks and let them air

If mould appears

Take it outside. Brush the surface off with a dry soft brush — outdoors, so you are not spreading spores through the house. Wipe with a barely damp cloth, then let it dry slowly in shade with moving air. Never in direct sun, and never with a hairdryer.

Once it is completely dry, condition it lightly. Mould feeds on the finish and the oils, so the hide will be thirstier than usual afterwards.

Monsoon

Rain itself is survivable. Blot, stuff loosely with paper to hold the shape, and dry at room temperature away from any heat. What ruins a wallet is trying to speed that up.

Wax-oiled leather handles our weather best of anything we cut — rain beads and runs straight off it.

Air conditioning

Worth knowing: a room that swings between air-conditioned and open all day drives moisture in and out of the fibres repeatedly. That cycling is harder on leather than steady humidity. A shelf in a room with stable conditions beats a cupboard that gets blasted cold each evening.

The general routine is in leather care.
