Why We Use Wax-Oiled Leather for Bags

A bag lives a harder life than a wallet. It goes on the floor of a car, under a desk, through rain between the office and the park. So the leather we choose for one is chosen for different reasons — and wax-oiled leather is usually the answer.

What wax-oiled leather is

The hide is waxed the whole way through rather than finished on the surface. That is the important distinction. A surface coating wears off exactly where you handle a bag most — the handles, the corners, the flap edge. Wax carried right through the leather cannot wear off, because there is more of it underneath.

Rain runs off it

Water beads on the surface and runs rather than soaking in. It is not waterproof, and no one should sell it as such, but of every leather we cut this is the one that handles a downpour best. Wipe it dry, leave it at room temperature, and it is fine.

Scuffs rub out

This is the part people notice first. Scrape a wax-oiled bag against a doorframe and it marks — then rub the mark with a warm thumb and it disappears. The wax moves. On most leathers a scuff is permanent; here it is temporary unless you want to keep it.

It weathers rather than wears

Wax-oiled leather darkens slowly and unevenly — the corners and handles go first, the flat panels follow. After a couple of years a bag looks weathered rather than worn out, which is a very different thing and the whole reason we like it.

Looking after one

Very little. Rub marks out with a thumb as they happen. Condition it about once a year, less often than you would a veg-tanned piece, because the wax is already doing most of that work. Keep it away from direct heat — a radiator or a car dashboard will drive the oils out and that is the one thing that genuinely damages it.

The full range of hides we cut, and what each one does over ten years, is set out in Understand the Leathers. If you would rather learn to make one yourself, we run classes at the bench.
