Getting Stains Out of Leather, and When Not to Try
What you do in the first two minutes usually decides whether a mark fades or becomes permanent. Here is what works, and — just as important — what is beyond saving at home.
Never scrub
Scrubbing drives the stain deeper into the pores and abrades the grain while it does so. Blot. Always blot.
Water marks
The fix for a water spot is counterintuitive: more water. A ring forms because one patch dried differently to the rest, so dampen the whole panel evenly with a clean cloth and let it air-dry away from heat. The ring disappears because there is no longer an edge.
Oil and grease
Blot off whatever is sitting on the surface, then cover the mark in cornflour or talc and leave it overnight. The powder draws the oil up out of the leather. Brush it away gently in the morning and repeat if there is still a shadow.
Do not apply water to an oil stain. It spreads it.
Ink
Be honest with yourself here. On full-grain leather with nothing sealed over the surface, ink is usually permanent — that open surface is exactly what makes the leather age beautifully and exactly what makes it absorb ink instantly.
Do not reach for alcohol or hand sanitiser. They will lift some of the ink and take the colour with it, and you will end up with a pale patch that looks worse than the mark did.
Never use
- Household cleaning spray, bleach or baby wipes
- A hairdryer to speed up drying — heat cracks leather
- Anything you have not tested on a hidden area first
When to accept it
A mark on a full-grain piece is not a defect. Every scar on the hide was there before we cut it, and the ones you add belong to the same record. Most of what people want to remove in the first month, they would not remove a year later.
If a stain genuinely bothers you on something we made, bring it in — we would rather look at it than have you experiment on it.
