How to Spot Fake Leather Before You Buy

On By Ceylon Leather Crafts / 0 comments

Almost everything sold as leather in a shopping mall is technically leather and practically not. Here is how to tell, in about fifteen seconds, without asking anyone.

1. Look at a cut edge

The fastest test there is. Find an exposed edge — inside a card slot, along a strap. Real full-grain leather looks the same the whole way through: fibrous, slightly fuzzy underneath, one continuous material.

A coated split looks like a layer cake. You will see a thin skin of colour sitting on top of something pale and spongy. That skin is the finish. It will crack away from the layer beneath it, and once it starts you cannot stop it.

2. Look for a repeating grain

Nature does not repeat. If you find the same pore pattern twice on one panel, that pattern was pressed into the surface by a plate. Cheap goods do this at a small scale so the repeat is hard to catch — look at a large flat area and move your eye slowly.

Note that embossing itself is not dishonest. We emboss saffiano and it is excellent leather. The dishonesty is embossing a split so it resembles the layer it is not.

3. Press it with a thumb

Full grain creases under pressure and recovers when you let go. Coated split creases and keeps the crease, because the coating has permanently deformed.

4. Smell it

Less reliable than it used to be — there are sprays that fake it — but a genuinely tanned hide has a deep, slightly sweet smell that comes from inside the material rather than off the surface. Plastic smells like plastic.

5. Read the words carefully

The label is where the useful information hides.

  • “Full grain” or “top grain” — a real claim about a real layer
  • “Genuine leather” — not a grade. It means only that leather is present somewhere
  • “Bonded leather” — scraps ground up and glued to a backing sheet
  • “Leather-look”, “PU”, “vegan leather” — plastic, and at least honest about it

Why we go on about this

Because the difference is invisible on day one and total by year three. A split wallet and a full-grain wallet can look identical in a photograph, cost similar money, and end up in completely different places — one in a bin, one darker and better than when you bought it.

What the layers actually are is set out in Understanding Leather Grades.
